On September 23 and 24, 2025, the first Gynzone workshop in Latvia will take place in Riga, with 15 midwives from various maternity wards across the country participating. During the workshop, the participants will deepen their knowledge of perineal trauma care and suturing techniques, which are essential skills for ensuring safe and gentle care for women after childbirth.
Statistics show that perineal trauma affects up to 90% of women giving birth, and proper care has a direct impact on a woman’s well-being and quality of life. Until now, midwives in Latvia have mainly acquired these skills through self-learning, as the training volume available during their studies has not been sufficient. In practice, new colleagues are trained by more experienced specialists, but without any unified training system or program. Therefore, the structured training program developed in Denmark by Gynzone is a particularly important step in improving the quality of maternity care in Latvia.
Since the end of 2024, the workshop participants have already been actively working with the Gynzone digital learning platform, and now they will have the opportunity to further strengthen their previously gained knowledge in a practical setting. In addition, each midwife has committed to pass on the acquired knowledge to at least four of her colleagues within the next year, thereby expanding the spread of expertise and improving the quality of care in maternity wards throughout Latvia.
This important training is organized by the Latvian Midwives Association, with co-financing from the Maternity Hospital Foundation, supported by donations from the Daugavas Vanagi organization. This makes it possible for Latvian midwives, for the first time, to directly participate in the internationally recognized Gynzone training model.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, this event marks a significant step towards ensuring that every woman in Latvia receives professional, compassionate, and evidence-based care after childbirth.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose contribution has made this masterclass a reality!
